A classification of consensus methods for phylogenetics
نویسنده
چکیده
A consensus tree method takes a collection of phylogenetic trees and outputs a single “representative” tree. The first consensus method was proposed by Adams in 1972. Since then a large variety of different methods have been developed, and there has been considerable debate over how they should be used. This paper has two goals. First, we survey the main consensus tree methods used in phylogenetics. Second, we explore, pretty exhaustively, the links between the different methods, producing a classification of consensus tree methods.

On the Weighted Quartet Consensus Problem
In phylogenetics, the consensus problem consists in summarizing a set of phylogenetic trees that all classify the same set of species into a single tree. Several definitions of consensus exist in the literature; in this paper we focus on the Weighted Quartet Consensus problem, a problem with unknown complexity status so far. Here we prove that the Weighted Quartet Consensus problem is NP-hard a...
متن کاملMetaheuristic Approaches for Deriving High Quality Fully Resolved Consensus Trees
The consensus tree problem primarily arises in the domain of phylogenetics and seeks to find for a given collection of trees a single tree best representing it. Such a tree collection is usually obtained by biologists for a specific taxa set either via different phylogenetic inference methods or multiple applications of a nondeterministic procedure. Existing consensus methods often have the dis...
متن کاملPlant Classification in Images of Natural Scenes Using Segmentations Fusion
This paper presents a novel approach to automatic classifying and identifying of tree leaves using image segmentation fusion. With the development of mobile devices and remote access, automatic plant identification in images taken in natural scenes has received much attention. Image segmentation plays a key role in most plant identification methods, especially in complex background images. Wher...
متن کاملBuilding Consensus with Balanced Splits
Given the multitude of sources for reconstructing the evolutionary history between entities, phylogenetic reconstruction methods often provide several trees classifying these entities. A key step in reconciling the different trees is to construct a consensus view of the history. If we consider each tree as a collection of laminar splits (two-way partitions), the primary problem in arriving at a...
متن کاملGreedy Strict-Consensus Merger: A New Method to Combine Multiple Phylogenetic Trees
Large and comprehensive phylogenetic trees are desirable for studying macroevolutionary processes and for classification purposes. One approach for obtaining large phylogenies is to combine the topologies (or source trees) from previous phylogenetic studies. Tree reconstruction techniques that use the above methodology are known as supertree methods. In this paper, we develop a new supertree al...
